John W. Martin, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born April 28, 1917, in St. Louis, son of Joseph E. and Isabelle Stewart Martin. He and Mildred Manger were married May 14, 1938, in St. Louis. She died March 25, 1994.
Martin worked at Curtis Wright in St. Louis from 1941-43, moving to Cape Girardeau in 1946. He was a newsman at KGMO and KATZ, wrote feature articles for several newspapers, and owned and operated State Collection Agency from 1971 until retiring in 1983.
He was in the U.S. Navy from February 1944 to March 1946, serving in the Asiatic Theater and Philippine Liberation.
Survivors include a son, John Martin of Whiting, Ind.; three daughters, Barbara Harper of Cape Girardeau, Marjorie Martin of Fairfield, Conn., Claire Martin of Bridgeport, Conn.; a sister, Victoria Smith of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Monday.
Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum. Walter J. Ford will officiate.
