John Weldon Lafferty, 80, died Friday, Nov. 1, 1996, at the Cape Girardeau Nursing Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born April 2, 1916, at Oxly, Mo., son of John and Rachel McKinney Lafferty.
He served in the United States Navy from 1936 until 1953 during World War II and the Korean War, and he was a prisoner of war for 36 months during World War II. He also served 10 years in the Naval Fleet Reserve.
On Jan. 4, 1946, he married Violet Grisham in Poplar Bluff. From 1959 until 1978 he worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company in St. Louis. Upon retiring, he and his wife moved to Jackson, where he attended First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, one son, John W. Lafferty, Jr., of Pulaski, Tenn.; one daughter, Barbara Green, of Jackson; one brother, Arthur Lafferty, of Crystal River, Fla.; one sister, Beulah Hillborn, of Jonesboro, Ark.; one grandson, Mike Lafferty of San Antonio, Texas; two granddaughters, Heather Pulliam of Jackson and Trashea Kraft of Good Springs, Tenn.; and three great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at McCombs Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rodney Travis and Rev. Bill Ellis officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.
