MOUNDS, Ill. -- John Eugene Johnson, 72, of Mounds died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Nursing Center in Marion. MOUNDS, Ill. -- John Eugene Johnson, 72, of Mounds died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Nursing Center in Marion.
He was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Dongola, son of Elzy William and Cora Elizabeth Little Johnson.
Johnson was a retired restaurant chef. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include four sons, Ronald Johnson of Como, N.C., Chris and Greg Johnson of Spring Lake, N.C., Doug Johnson of Outbank, N.C.; two brothers, Starling Johnson of New Port Richey, Fla., Charles "Chuck" Johnson of New Lenox; two sisters, Hallie Hinkle of Dongola, Pearl Johnson of Pekin; several grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
His body was donated to Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Jones Funeral Home in Tamms is in charge of arrangements.
