William Clinton "John" Gilmer Jr. of Scott City died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. William Clinton "John" Gilmer Jr. of Scott City died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Nov. 25, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, the son of William Clinton and Bertha Enelia Johnston Gilmer Sr. He married Mary Michele Glazier on Dec. 15, 1965, in Paragould, Arkansas.

John was a retired conductor with the Southern Pacific-Cotton Belt Railroad. He was a member of Scott City First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He served in the U.S. Army. John took great pride in bringing smiles to children's faces as Rollo the clown.

Survivors include his wife, Michele of Scott City; a son, Tom (Tracey) Gilmer of Scott City; two daughters, Tricia (Jeff) Curnell and Susie Gilmer, both of Scott City; a brother, Gary (Shelia) Gilmer of Devine, Texas; four grandchildren, Tom, Tim, Taylor and Chelsea Gilmer; and a great-grandson, Laythan Stone.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Amick Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

The funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Jeremy Sells officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Lightner Memorial Cemetery at Scott City.
