John R. Cowell, 82, of Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born June 13, 1921, in Charleston, Mo., son of Charley Eugene and Lois Clayton Cowell. He and Josephine Halter were married Oct. 24, 1937, in Caruthersville, Mo. She died May 4, 2002.
Cowell had been a truck driver and dispatcher with Jones Truck Line in St. Louis. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in battles in central Europe.
Survivors include two sons, John "Sonny" Cowell Jr. of Sikeston, Mo., Terry Cowell of St. Louis; a daughter, Sharyn Cowell of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with Bishop Michael Comer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston, with military honors by Missouri Military Funeral Honor Guard.
