John F. Bowlin, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Symsonia, Ky., son of the late Joseph and Verda Farmer Bowlin. He and Wilma Mescher were married Dec. 22, 1946, in Metropolis, Ill.

Bowling was formerly of Mounds, Ill. He was a claimsman/adjuster with Country Companies Insurance Co. He was a member of Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, Masonic Lodge 91 in Metropolis, served on the Mounds Library Board, and was a former member of Southern Illinois Counsel for the Aging in Carterville, Ill.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Bowlin of Cape Girardeau; a son, Dr. Dan O. Bowlin and wife Donna of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Nancy Herman and husband Bob of Londonderry, N.H.; a sister, Minnie Jo Smith of Calvert City, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Beth and Laura Bowlin, Amanda and Sam Herman.

Friends may call at Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge, Ill., from 5 to 8 p.m. today, and Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at Maple United Methodist Church on Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. Interment will be in IOOF Cemetery in Metropolis. Military honors will be conducted by members of Pulaski County VFW Post 8891 in Mounds, American Legion Post 178 in Villa Ridge and Cairo VFW Post 2649.
