CAIRO, Ill. -- Funeral Mass for John Ed Beno of Cairo will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jerome Fortenberry will officiate. Burial will be in U.S. National Cemetery at Mound City.

Friends may call at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo from 5-8 p.m. today. Parish prayers will be at 7.

Beno, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was born April 6, 1922, in Cairo, son of Emil and Mary Bergman Beno.

Beno was a mail carrier in Cairo 39 years. He was selected as one of America's "Real People" and was featured on the television show of the same name.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and Cairo VFW Post. He was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Anita; a sister, Virginia Moore of Baton Rouge, La.; and a brother, Joseph Beno of Clearwater, Fla.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
