John Thomas Bennett, 84, of Apex, N.C., died Monday, April 2, 2007. Mr. Bennett was born March 11, 1923, in Shingle, Calif., to William Wiley and Ella Walker Bennett. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force and Air Force during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. John Thomas Bennett, 84, of Apex, N.C., died Monday, April 2, 2007.

Mr. Bennett was born March 11, 1923, in Shingle, Calif., to William Wiley and Ella Walker Bennett.

He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force and Air Force during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from the Air Force in 1970 with 27 years of service.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for more than 50 years and served as branch president in the 1970s. He and his wife Zelma served an LDS Church mission in the Massachusetts, Boston mission.

He is survived by his wife, Zelma Nolan Bennett; children, Gordon Bennett and wife Michelle of Franklin, Tenn., Shauna Bennett of Jackson, Robert Bennett and wife Ginger of Apex; grandchildren, Brian, Whitney, Craig, Hannah, Spencer, Chelsea, Alex, and Morgan; a sister, Wanda Morgan of Fort Collins, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by sisters, Mildred Wille and Ella Mae Farrow.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McCombs Funeral Home, 1425 Kurre Lane, Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 1048 West Cape Rock Drive, Cape Girardeau. Burial will follow at the McClain Chapel Cemetery on Big Foot Lane in Oriole.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to LDS Church Humanitarian Fund.
