TAMMS, Ill. -- John L. Abercrombie, 78, of Tamms died at 5:04 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Sept. 12, 1925, in McClure, Ill., son of Chester Arthur and Cecil Miles Abercrombie. J.L. married Mary C. Colyer Aug. 2, 1946.
J.L. attended McClure High School. He was a member of American Legion Post in McClure and a member of VFW Post in Cairo.
He was a trooper with Illinois State Police until retiring. He then worked for several trucking companies and concluded his driving career working for a lifetime friend at Donald Jordan Trucking Co.
J.L. served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa A. (Gary) Livesay of San Diego, Calif., Lana R. (David) Andrews of Cape Girardeau; a son, Alan D. (Gerri) Abercrombie of Anna, Ill.; two brothers, Merle Abercrombie of Red Bud, Ill., Robert D. (Bernell) Abercrombie of Tamms; seven grandchildren; and a stepgrandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Raymond Oxford officiating. Burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery, with full military rites by VFW Post 3455.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Missouri Veterans Home, 2400 Veterans Memorial Drive, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701.
