Joe Dan Schoolfield, 66, of Burfordville passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 19, 1947, in Cape Girardeau, son of Claude and Algeron Jackson Schoolfield. He and Harriett Ann Weeks were married Aug. 4, 1981, at Bell City, Missouri.
Joe served as a U.S. Navy Corpsman, was in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd division of the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Combat Action Ribbon; Navy Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal 1, 2, 3, 4; and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He graduated from Clarkton High School in 1965 and was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in 1975. He was a biochemist and an advertising executive with many local media companies. He was a former owner of Plasco. Joe was a member of Jackson Elks Lodge 2652 and a lifelong member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau, Jackson American Legion and Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. He was an avid bluegrass musician and could play any instrument. He was also a talented artist.
Survivors include his wife, Harriett; two sons, Joe Schoolfield of Jackson and Tyson Schoolfield of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Melody Anderson of Jackson; a sister, Pat Bermudez of Immokalee, Florida; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with Paul Short officiating.
A meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 804 N. Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau.
Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, Missouri, is in charge of arrangements.
