BERNIE, Mo. -- Joe Marion Scales, 84, of Bernie, son of the late Joe R. and Pauline Cobb Scales, was born in Stoddard County, Missouri, on Oct. 30, 1934, and departed this life Monday, April 8, 2019, at Cypress Point Healthcare in Dexter, Missouri.
Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had worked at Brown Shoe Co. as an electrician and then at Liberty Township as road boss until his retirement. He had also worked as a driver for Dunklin County Transit.
He was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Malden, Missouri. He was also a member of Elks and Eagles, both of Dexter. He started up the first Bernie Little League Baseball organization.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn Kay Whitehead in Campbell, Missouri, April 18, 1964.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Scales of Bernie; a daughter, Kelly Owens of Jackson; a son, Joe Anthony Scales of Syracuse, New York; four grandchildren, Krystal Hobgood, Waylon Owens and Lindsey and Rachel Scales; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Annita Hurley of Bernie; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Bolen; and sister, Joyce Davis.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
