Joe Roy Mayfield Sr., 71, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, at Southeast Hospital.
He was born Dec. 26, 1925, at Jackson, son of Emory J. and Lennie Jones Mayfield. He married Wanda Maxine Taylor on Feb. 24, 1951, at Osceola, Ark.
He graduated from Jackson High School and Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He worked for Lee Optical in Cape Girardeau until he retired in 1987.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Post 63 in Cape Girardeau and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe R. Mayfield Jr. of O'Fallon; two stepdaughters, Donna Nicholson of Vidor, Texas, and Nancy Smith of Houston; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Ford & Sons' Mount Auburn Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Cy Smith officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park, with a military service conducted by American Legion Post 63 at the cemetery.
