Gerald Joe Martin, 69, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Life Care Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born April 9, 1949, in San Diego, the son Robert Edwin and Yvonne Marie Weir Martin. Joe and Marian Frances McCormick were married Aug. 28, 1999.

Joe enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on March 24, 1969, and was honorably discharged March 23, 1973, from active duty. He then entered the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 3, 1979, and was honorably discharged Jan. 13, 1987, at the rank of captain.

He attained a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial supervision from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor of Science degree in historical preservation at Southeast Missouri State University. Joe also earned a Master of Science degree in public administration at Southeast Missouri State University. He moved to Jackson in 1985.

Joe was a member of American Legion Post 158 in Jackson and for several years was a faithful volunteer for the American Red Cross. Joe also enjoyed Civil War re-enactments and was a representative of the Turner Brigade Artillery Unit.

Loving survivors include his wife, Marian Martin of Jackson; two nephews, Kenneth Wayne Martin and Michael Lee Martin; and a niece, Shannon Dora Frakies.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. An American Legion service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a celebration of life service and military honors.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the church or charity of the donor's choice.
