Betty Joan Chapman Jones, 76, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 14, 1940, to Besse D. and Frank Chapman.
On July 15, 1978, she married the love of her life, Gerald L. Jones, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Joan has been described as a person who, no matter whether she knew you for 30 minutes or 30 years, always made you feel loved. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau, and she was instrumental in organizing the downtown Neighborhood Connection that provided outreach to members of the neighborhood surrounding her church. She was also a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club. She was a volunteer for the reading program at Blanchard Elementary. She attended the University of Alabama and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald Jones; one daughter, Claire (Mark) Kneer of Cape Girardeau; and three sons, Peyton (Bebe) Powell of Huntsville, Alabama, James "Bo" Powell of Cape Girardeau and Drew (Kerri) Jones of Cape Girardeau. She also is survived by six grandchildren, Chapman Powell and Ashley Johnston of Montgomery, Alabama, Riley and Garrett Jones of Cape Girardeau and Nick and Nathan Karnes of Cape Girardeau.
She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, John Lyon, and a granddaughter, Haley Nichole Karnes.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorial donations may be given to Christ Episcopal Church and the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
