Jimmy R. Payne, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at Jackson Manor.
He was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Cape Girardeau to Clyde and Frankie Steele Payne. He and Martha Matthews Pickett were married Jan. 15, 1977. She preceded him in death March 29, 2013.
He actively served two years in the Korean War and then three and a half years in the National Guard.
He worked for Midwest Dairy, Biederman's Furniture Co. and Kastens Brick Co. Most of his career, he was the produce manager for Kroger and Dollar General Store.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 158 Altenthal-Journs in Jackson.
He attended St. Mary Cathedral.
Survivors include his two daughters, Janet (Mark) Venable of Jackson and Debra (David) Lumbley of Modesto, California; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister, Ann Abbott.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Graveside service, with fully miitary honors, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating.
Memorial contributions may be given to American Legion Post No. 158 Scholarship Fund.
