Jimmie Baker

Jimmie H. Baker, 61, went to be with his loved ones in heaven Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016.

He was born July 13, 1954, in Cairo, Illinois, son of Jimmie W. and Pattie P. "Pat" Powles Baker.

Jimmie graduated from Airline High School in Bossier City, Louisiana, in 1972. After graduation, Jimmie enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served his country stateside during the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of airman first class. He was very proud of his service to his country and took pride in being a veteran.

Jimmie worked for Luhr Brothers for almost 20 years, starting as a deckhand and working his way up to chief engineer. He also worked at Havco Wood Products and for Manpower. Jimmie had a talent for working with machinery.

Jimmie was an avid sports fan. Two of his favored schools were LSU and Oklahoma University. His favorite team was the Minnesota Vikings, and he enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jimmie was a trivia buff and he watched "Jeopardy" every chance he had. One of his true loves was cars. He enjoyed driving, owning, discussing and seeing vintage muscle cars.

Jimmie was a caring person who helped, encouraged and supported family and friends. Jimmie loved life, laughing and friends.

Jimmie is survived by a son, Jimmie H. "J.J." Baker Jr. of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Cathi Baker Burnham, and brother-in-law, Mike Burnham, of Bossier City; a nephew, Bradley Anderson and wife Shannon of Benton, Louisiana; a niece, Brittany Anderson and fiance Dr. Richard Jacobson of Shreveport, Louisiana; a stepnephew, Brent and wife Brook Burnham of Shreveport; aunts; uncles; cousins; his support group, including Vi Baker and Becky and Steve Essex; and many friends. His humor, wit and friendship will be missed.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

There will be a graveside memorial at 11 a.m. April 23 at McCrite Cemetery, with a gathering after at the Community Center in Tamms, Illinois.
