Jerry Schlegel, 79 of Cape Girardeau fell asleep in Jesus on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the Lutheran Home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1938, in Cape Girardeau to the late Waldo G. and Irma-Dell Young Schlegel. Jerry and Patricia "Pat" Young were married Sept. 20, 1959, in Cape Girardeau.

Jerry served in the Army Reserves from 1955 to 1964. He worked for Missouri Utilities, which was later Union Electric and then Ameren UE, for 33 years. He coached boys church league basketball and also officiated basketball for more than 12 years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had a love for hunting, fishing and gardening.

He was the beloved husband of Pat Schlegel for 58 years; cherished father of Matthew (Kristen) Schlegel of Jackson and Lesley (John) Werner of Missouri City, Texas; dear brother of Jeffery W. Schlegel of Cape Girardeau; dear brother-in-law to Peggy J. (Nelson) Fielder of Springfield, Missouri; beloved grandfather of Morgan and David Schlegel, Seth (Adelyn) Schlegel, Anne Marie Schlegel, Reagan Werner, Wilson Werner and Clayton Werner; dear father-in-law to Laura Schlegel; and loving uncle to Michael, David and Lindsey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and loving son, Douglas W. "Doug" Schlegel.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Douglas C. Breite officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Home or Saint Francis Hospice.
