Jerry Obermiller

The funeral for Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Jerry Lee Obermiller of Jefferson City, Mo., was held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City. The Rev. Rudolph W. Beard officiated. Entombment was in Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum, with full military honors.

Houser-Millard Funeral Home in Jefferson City was in charge of arrangements.

Obermiller, 78, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 5, 1924, in Jackson, son of Theodore and Ethel Davis Obermiller. He and Leona M. Fisher were married June 16, 1956, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Obermiller was a 1942 graduate of Jackson High School, a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, and Officers Candidate School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1966 and was a veteran of World War II.

Obermiller worked at Western Union from 1966 to 1969, and then was a social studies/psychology teacher at Jefferson City High School until retiring in 1989.

He was the home game announcer for Jefferson City Jays football team more than 10 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and was a deacon. He was a lifetime member of Retired Officers Association and the local chapter in Columbia, Mo., and a lifetime member of Reserve Officers Association.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Karen Kertis of Rochester, Minn.; two sons, Kirk Obermiller of Jefferson City, Kevin Obermiller of St. Louis; two brothers, James Obermiller of Grand Rapids, Mich., Jack Obermiller of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Madge Abernathy of Centerville, Ohio, Martha Egley of Webster Groves, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
