Jerry Lipps

Jerry Lee Lipps, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at his home.

He was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Cape Girardeau, son of Fred and Leora Brown Lipps. He and Ruth Naomi Wolters were married May 19, 1957, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Lipps was in the U.S. Navy from July 9, 1952, to May 30, 1954. He was a member of the first crew to serve aboard the LST 1156. He earned the National Defense Service Medal.

He owned and operated Jerry Lipps Trucking Co. more than 50 years. He was a member of Red Star Baptist Church, serving on various committees such as building, grounds and finance. He served on the board of directors of Old Time Gospel Hour and was a major contributor to Liberty University; board of directors of PTL Network and Heritage, USA; board of directors of original Cape County Bank, Cape Girardeau; member of President's Council, the highest level of membership in the Copper Dome Society of Southeast Missouri State University; and member of Cape Girardeau Redevelopment Corp.

Lipps was active in softball, playing for area teams, pitching several shutouts.

He formed Horizon Foundation to aid families in need of food and other necessities. Later the Horizon Foundation sponsored the Hope for America Crusades.

Lipps was also a member of Paducah, Ky., Chamber of Commerce, Associated Industries of Missouri, American Trucking Association, Greater Cape Girardeau Industrial Park Association, Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, and SEMO Booster Club. He was presented several awards for contributions to American Cancer Society.

He was appointed a deputy with Scott County Sheriff's Department.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Richard (Karen) Lipps of Jackson, Doug Lipps and Dennis Lipps of Cape Gir-ardeau; two daughters, Janis Brumbaugh and Judi Lipps of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Cy Smith officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum. Full military rites will be conducted by Missouri Honors Team.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson Foundation, Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation, Red Star Baptist Church or the charity of choice.
