SIKESTON, Mo. — Jerry Webster Helmes, 66, of Sikeston died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Sikeston.

He was born March 23, 1942, in Anniston, Mo., son of the late Elsie Lavern Robison Helmes.

Helmes was of the Baptist belief, a member of Harley Owners Group (HOG) and Sikeston Masonic Lodge.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War.

Helmes was owner and operator of Helmes Quick Sack 27 years before retiring.

He and Janet Faye Hodges were married April 2, 1964. She preceded him in death June 8, 1996.

Two brothers, Anthony "Tony" Helmes and Jamie Helmes, and a sister, Barbara Adams, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Clinton W. Helmes of Sikeston, Dale "Hulio" Williams of Morehouse, Mo.; a daughter, Jerri Linda Helmes of Sikeston; two brothers, Glen Allen Helmes and Donald "Kevin" Helmes of Matthews, Mo.; a sister, Sharon F. Helmes of Cape Girardeau; and two grandchildren, Tyler White and Sydney Helmes of Sikeston.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ponder Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Randy Deprow, pastor of Tallapoosa Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Sikeston with full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Gary Hampton, Randy Dukes, Bobby Robison, Glen Allen Helmes Jr., Marvin Gilmore and Richie Riley.

Jerry will be sorely missed. He always had a smile on his face and an encouraging word for anyone who would listen.
