Jerome A. Welter, 85, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau.

He was born April 9, 1926, in Kelso, Mo., to Joe and Theresa Huering Welter. He and Evelyn Sample were married Jan. 14, 1947, in Cape Girardeau.

Jerome was a deacon and member of Lynwood Baptist Church and former deacon and member of Red Star Baptist Church.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and fought on the beaches of Iwo Jima. He served on the LSM 239.

Welter was a carpenter with Riverside Construction.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Welter of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Janice Obermann and Debbie (Marty) Evans of Jackson; three brothers, Don (Cornetta) Welter of Columbia, Mo., Gary (Janet) Welter of Kelso, Mo., Dale Welter of Creve Coeur, Ill.; a sister, Sharon (Tom) Lappe of Biehle, Mo.; two grandchildren, Nicole Singh and Ronald (Karen) Obermann Jr.; and a great-grandchild, Isabelle Singh.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Welter; a brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lynwood Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery.
