Jeannette Tharp Smith Osteen, 94, of Cape Girardeau and formerly of Portageville, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 13, 1905, at Oakland, Tenn., daughter of Arthur Alexander and Jessie Tharp Smith. She was married to Joseph W. Osteen. He died Aug. 29, 1972.
Osteen attended Oakland schools and was a graduate of the Earle, Ark., High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the Blue Mountain College at Blue Mountain, Miss., and was a schoolteacher in her earlier years. She was a resident of Portageville for many years before moving to Cape Girardeau. She was a member of the Portageville United Methodist Church and enjoyed flower gardening and family genealogy.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeannine McGinnis of Cape Girardeau; a son, Larry W. Osteen of Picayune, Miss.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother.
Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home at Somerville, Tenn.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gordon Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at the Macon Cemetery at Macon, Tenn.
