CHARLESTON -- Jean Fancher Hearnes, 64, of Charleston died Sunday, Dec. 24, 1995, at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was born July 26, 1931, at Newport, Tenn., to Joseph Harmon and Maxie Zelma Roberts Fancher. On Aug. 15, 1953, she married Robert Earl Hearnes Sr., who died Oct. 8, 1983...

CHARLESTON -- Jean Fancher Hearnes, 64, of Charleston died Sunday, Dec. 24, 1995, at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

She was born July 26, 1931, at Newport, Tenn., to Joseph Harmon and Maxie Zelma Roberts Fancher. On Aug. 15, 1953, she married Robert Earl Hearnes Sr., who died Oct. 8, 1983.

She was the sister-in-law of former Missouri Gov. Warren E. Hearnes.

She attended Lincoln University in Harrogate, Tenn., before moving to Missouri in 1950.

She was a license bureau director for 13 years and worked with her husband, a certified public accountant, until his death. She then operated Hearnes Tax and Accounting Service until her retirement.

She had served as Charleston city treasurer since 1983. She was treasurer of the Mississippi Democratic Party for 13 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Charleston, the Missouri Historical Society and the Mississippi County Historical Society. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as membership chairman, Good Citizens chairman and registrar. She was a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Junior Women's Club.

Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Hearnes Jr. of Charleston, Warren E. Hearnes II of Atlanta, Ga., one stepson, Walter S. Hearnes of Cape Girardeau; and two step-grandsons. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Lee Hearnes; one brother; and two sisters.

Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Charleston with the Rev. Rick White officiating. Burial will follow in I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
