Jean Cavaner, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born June 10, 1929, in Cape Girardeau, son of Leo Emerson and Jane McCormick Cavaner. He and Ruby Pittman were married May 29, 1966, in Cape Girardeau. She died June 26, 2001.

Cavaner received a bachelor of arts degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1950. He was associated with his mother at Big Star Market from 1961 to 1972. He then started Shoppers Warehouse Market, the first discount grocery store in Cape Girardeau. He had more than 30 years of combined retailing and newspaper advertising experience, including 10 years as an advertising account executive with the Southeast Missourian newspaper. He retired June 30, 1991.

Cavaner was a member of First Baptist Church and helped form a music quartet.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include two brothers-in-law, Dale Randolph of Advance, Mo., and Avery Randolph of Wood River, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jay White officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
