Jarred D. Schumpert, 28, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, along with his son, 2-year-old Lyndon Schumpert, in Garland, Texas.
He was born Nov. 9, 1986, in Marshall, Texas. He and Laura M. Hampson were married May 28, 2011, in St. Louis.
Jarred was an exceptional athlete during his school years and received many scholarship offers for college. He accepted a football scholarship to play for Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. He played for the SBU Bearcats from 2006 to 2009 where he started a remarkable 38 games and still holds school records in tackles, solo tackles and fumbles forced, while also ranking in the top three in assisted tackles, tackles for a loss, and yards from tackles for a loss. Jarred played in the 2010 Valero Cactus Bowl.
SBU president Dr. Pat Taylor stated "Jarred is one of the finest young men I have met at SBU. He was a great football player for the Bearcats, an outstanding student and a role-model citizen." He graduated with a degree in sociology. He settled in Cape Girardeau, where he was employed by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
Survivors include his wife, Laura of Cape Girardeau; his mother, Beverly Turner of Texas; three brothers, Floyd, Jamal and Joseph Schumpert of Texas; a sister, Valerie Carter Timmons of Texas; an uncle, Victor (Patricia) Whitfield and family; aunts, Regina (Eddie) Jackson and family and Wanda (Billy) Bosley and family; nephews, Royce and Josiah Schumpert, all of Texas; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Also his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John R. and Mary Hampson; a sister-in-law, Sarah Hampson; a brother-in-law, Daniel (Stacie) Hampson; and nephews, Dez and Braxton Hampson and Ashlyn Davis.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Josie Whitfield, and his father, Floyd Schumpert Sr.
A celebration of life for Jarred and his son, Lyndon, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville, Missouri.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service. The Rev. Milton Ryan will officiate, with Coach Keith Allen delivering the eulogy and Victor Whitfield offering prayer.
