OLIVE BRANCH, Ill. -- Jarod Shumaker, 37, of Olive Branch died Sunday, July 12, 2015, in Alexander County.
He was born July 5, 1978, in Cape Girardeau, son of Gerald Dale and Linda McCain Shumaker.
Jarod was a graduate of Egyptian High School, Shawnee College with an associate of arts, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a bachelor's in liberal arts, Southeast Missouri State University with a master's of academic curriculum, and Murray State University with a master of arts in music theory. He received the Heartland's Best Teacher Award and received outstanding teacher certificates from Rep. John Shimkus and Judy Baar Topinka.
He had been a music instructor but recently became a personal assistant through the department of DOORS. Jarod was a member of the tourism bureau, especially active in the Tour de Shawnee. He was a member of Southeast Missouri Union Choir and was an avid bicyclist.
Survivors include his parents, Dale and Linda Shumaker of Olive Branch; a sister, Jessica (Jimmy) Johnson of Grand Chain, Illinois; a niece, Lily Johnson of Grand Chain; a nephew, Noah Johnson of Grand Chain; uncles and aunts, Alfred and Cathy McCain, David and Donna McCain, Elva McCain, Leonard Jackson, Henry Shumaker, Dora and Joe Gardner, Alice Joyce, Donna and Tom Windburg; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Leta Shumaker and Alfred and Johanna McCain.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, Illinois, with the Revs. Joe Gardner and Curt Gardner officiating. Interment will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Tour de Shawnee and will be accepted at the funeral home.
