MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Januarius Joseph Peters, 77, of Marble Hill passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, surrounded by family.
He was born March 5, 1935, at Leopold, Mo., son of Theodore Joseph and Catharine Adele Hinkebein Peters. He and Martha Myers Ladd were married June 29, 1985, at Leopold.
Januar was a former construction worker, working for F.X. Peters, and then worked in law enforcement 17 years as a deputy sheriff and Bollinger County sheriff, a job he loved and was so proud to serve. He retired from Twin City Materials Co.
He volunteered daily at Marble Hill Senior Center, delivering Meals on Wheels. He was a lifelong member of St. John Catholic Church at Leopold. He served as a grand knight of Council 5898, navigating to the 4th Degree Assembly. He was an active member of Ten Point Hunt Club, Bollinger County Antique Tractor Club, Missouri Right to Life and Missouri Retired Sheriffs Association. He served as a standing board member of the VIP Sheltered Workshop. He loved working on the ancestral family farm, golfing and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Peters; a daughter, Sherry Ann (Tommy) Caylor, and a son, Randy (Debbie) Ladd, both of Paducah, Ky.; two grandsons, Korey Ladd and Travis Caylor, and a granddaughter, Madison Caylor, all of Paducah; three sisters, Sister Marie Ambrose Peters of St. Louis, Margie Ann Eftink of Marble Hill and Bonnie Diebold of Dresden, Tenn.; two brothers, Ted and Mark Peters of Leopold; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Katelyn Elizabeth Ladd; and three brothers, F.X., Ambrose and Matthew Peters.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Catholic Church. Parish prayers will begin at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. William Hennecke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Hutchings Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill is in charge of arrangements.
