CHARLESTON -- Janie May Cooper, 95, of Charleston, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1994, at her home. She was born Sept. 29, 1898, in Melbourne, Ark., daughter of James Daniel and Amanda Elizabeth Dowdle Lawrence. She and the Rev. Allen Britten Cooper were married Feb. 8, 1918...

CHARLESTON -- Janie May Cooper, 95, of Charleston, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1994, at her home.

She was born Sept. 29, 1898, in Melbourne, Ark., daughter of James Daniel and Amanda Elizabeth Dowdle Lawrence. She and the Rev. Allen Britten Cooper were married Feb. 8, 1918.

The Coopers were instrumental in building 15 churches in the Mississippi County area. She was named Missouri Mother of the Year in 1969.

Survivors include six daughters, Velna Brown, Julia Warren and Betty Hearnes of Charleston, Rose Jordan of Greer, S.C., Jane Stacy and Jennie Cooper of Cape Girardeau; a son, James Cooper of St. Louis; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son and a grandson.

Friends may call at First Baptist Church in Charleston after 5 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Robert Capra and Gerald Collier officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.

McMikle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
