CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Janet Magdalene Essner Layman, daughter of the late Joseph Eugene and Loretta Schaefer Essner was born on Jan. 26, 1941, and departed this life on Monday, July 18, 2022, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 81. Born a small-town girl, Janet took a leap of faith and moved to St Louis in 1978, where she met the love of her life, H.L. Layman. They married in Ferguson, Missouri, on June 19, 1982...

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Janet Magdalene Essner Layman, daughter of the late Joseph Eugene and Loretta Schaefer Essner was born on Jan. 26, 1941, and departed this life on Monday, July 18, 2022, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 81.

Born a small-town girl, Janet took a leap of faith and moved to St Louis in 1978, where she met the love of her life, H.L. Layman. They married in Ferguson, Missouri, on June 19, 1982.

She was a member of the St Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee.

Janet graduated from Chaffee High School in 1959 and earned a license in cosmetology and held other jobs, including employment at Florsheim Shoe Factory, while she lived in Southeast Missouri. She earned a general education degree from St Louis Community College in 1978. She established her most rewarding occupation at Emerson Electric, where she worked for 15 years in the payroll and pension divisions.

After retirement, Janet and her husband relocated to rural Chaffee in 1994, where they enjoyed a peaceful life, embracing country living and raising their beloved dogs. H.L. preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2020, after 38 years of marriage.

Survivors include two brothers, Melvin (Pat) Essner of Scott City and Alfred (Frances) Essner of Bloomsdale; four nephews, Steve (Donna) Essner of Scott City, Danny Essner of Scott City, Doug (Ann) Menz of New Hamburg, Missouri, and Daren (Carrie) Essner of Chaffee; and five nieces, Cindy (Brad) Riggs of Scott City, Cheryl (Doug) Johnson of New Hamburg, Karen (David) Harper of New Hamburg, Rhonda (Robert) Overbeck of Cape Girardeau and Carmen (Rick) Stretch of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri; 13 great nieces and nephews; and 13 great-great nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, and husband, she was preceded in death by a twin sister, Jean Menz. Visitation.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022 with Father Joseph Kelly officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery in Chaffee.

Family requests all services be private, immediate family only, thoughts and prayers will be greatly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association or American Diabetes Association.
