James Moore III

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- James E. Moore III, 66, of Charleston, formerly of Sikeston, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Born July 31, 1939, in St. Louis, to the late James E. and Verona DeVore Moore Jr., he lived in Sikeston where he was a 57-year member of Sikeston United Methodist Church. In November 2004 he moved to Charleston and transferred his membership to Charleston United Methodist Church.

Following his graduation from Sikeston High School, he attended Westminster where he received his B.S. degree in math and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He then received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

In 1964 he began his law practice in Sikeston with Weber Gilmore. He opened his own law office in 1965. In 1990 he opened a second law office in Cape Girardeau. He served as an officer for the Young Democrats organization at the county and state level. After serving for four years as assistant prosecuting attorney in Scott County, he was elected Scott County Prosecuting Attorney for two terms.

He held memberships in the American Bar Association, Missouri Bar Association, as well as St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, and Scott County Bar Associations until his retirement from his law practice in 2005.

In addition to his active law practice, he had performed in a lead role for four musical productions of the Sikeston Little Theatre and was a Sikeston Jaycee.

On June 24, 1961, he married Karen Ann Giltz who survives of the home.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, James E. "J" Moore IV of Charleston; John David (Jo) Moore and their children, Macy Jo Moore and Scotty Lambert, all of Sikeston; a daughter, Verona (Mike) Lambert and their son, Austin Lambert, all of Jackson; and a brother, Jon (Jayne) Moore of Sikeston.

A brother, Bert Teachout, preceded him in death.

Family and friends will assemble at 9:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Sikeston, where a memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. The pastor, Rev. Geoff Posegate, and Rev. Roger Jespersen, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Charleston, will officiate. Private interment rites will be conducted later at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Charleston.
