James John Messmer, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born April 20, 1930, at Kelso, Mo., son of Edward Valentine and Clara Martin Messmer. He and Elizabeth Ann Colomb were married Feb. 5, 1955, in Houma, La.

Messmer was a self-employed carpenter/home builder with Ultra Modern Homes. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He moved to the Cape Gir­ar­deau area 30 years ago from Houma.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 to 1956.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Clark Messmer of Scott City, Lawrence Messmer of Houma, David Messmer of Marble Hill, Mo.; two daughters, Penny St. Pierre of Houma, Brenda Robertson of Benton, Mo.; a brother, Cletus Messmer of Scott City; a sister, Vera Rhodes of Cape Girardeau; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. Parish prayers will be at 7.

Funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph Church in Scott City at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. David Coon officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with military graveside rites.
