James Michael Lloyd, 67, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at his home. He was born March 24, 1946, in Cape Girardeau, to Charles W. and Helen M. Gerecke Lloyd. James Michael Lloyd, 67, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at his home.

He was born March 24, 1946, in Cape Girardeau, to Charles W. and Helen M. Gerecke Lloyd. He grew up in Malden, Mo., and graduated from Malden High School. He spent summers in Cape Girardeau on the farm of his grandparents, Louis and Frieda Gerecke.

James received a degree in business from Southeast Missouri State University.

He served as a petty officer first class in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, serving on board the USS Columbus. He also served in the United States Naval Reserve.

James was an independent contractor more than 20 years. He retired after 12 years as building superintendent at Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. After retiring he was a greeter two years at Landmark Hospital.

He was an avid Civil War enthusiast and a fan of all things concerning John Wayne. He was an animal lover his whole life and would have taken all the animals home from local shelters if he could. However, his greatest joy was being a father and grandfather.

Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Denae Clover of Herrin, Ill.; a brother, John W. Lloyd of Eugene, Ore.; and two grandsons, Jacob and Liam of Herrin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Ann Mowery officiating.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
