James L. "Jim" Estes, 72, of Florissant, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis County.

He was born Nov. 18, 1930, in Cape Girardeau, son of Willard H. "Dutch" and Frankie Williams Estes. He married Peggy M. Glenn.

Estes was a 1953 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, and a past president of the alumni association. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Delta.

He was a member and usher at Transfiguration Catholic Church, member of U.S. Navy Retired Officers Association, U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, USO, American Legion Post 1000, and Missouri Association of School Business Officials.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Christa Nichols and Cathy Estes of St. Louis; a sister, Martha Ann Young of Cape Girardeau; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, and a grandson.

Funeral Mass was held Jan. 11 at Transfiguration Church. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Florissant.

Buchholz Spanish Lake Mortuary in Spanish Lake, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.
