SIKESTON, Mo. -- James Ruben Erving, 47, of Sikeston, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was born June 6, 1954, in Crenshaw, Miss. He was the son of Clara Hankins and late Ruben Erving. He had lived in Essex, Mo., before serving in the U.S. Army. He moved to Sikeston in 1977. He was a graduate of Richland High School and a member of the Greers Chapel Baptist Church...

SIKESTON, Mo. -- James Ruben Erving, 47, of Sikeston, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born June 6, 1954, in Crenshaw, Miss. He was the son of Clara Hankins and late Ruben Erving.

He had lived in Essex, Mo., before serving in the U.S. Army. He moved to Sikeston in 1977. He was a graduate of Richland High School and a member of the Greers Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Clara and Charlie Hankins Sr. of Sikeston; a son, Courtney Erving Baker of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Patricia Smooth of Malden, Mo.; two step-brothers, Charlie Hankins Jr., of Sikeston, and Sheldon Hankins of Kansas City, Mo.; a step-sister, Dearmond D. Wofford of Kansas City, Mo.; his maternal grandmother, Grace Wynn of Sikeston; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Watkin & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Mo.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald Williams Sr., officiating.

Burial will be in Sunset of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
