TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- James Rolf Briney III, 65, of Tuscaloosa and formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, at the the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

He was born February 17, 1937, in Demopolis, Ala. He earned a bachelor's and a master's degree at Auburn University, and a doctoral degree in education at the University of Alabama.

He was chairman of the computer science department at Southeast Missouri State University until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of the Society of Logistics Engineers (Advanced Designation), Society of Certified Data Engineers and the Society of Certified Business Educators.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa and served as a Retired Senior Volunteer for FOCUS of Tuscaloosa.

He was a retired colonel of the 87th U.S. Army Manuever Area Command based in Birmingham, Ala. He was a 1976 graduate of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pa. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association in Tuscaloosa.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Ballow Briney of Tuscaloosa; two sons, Jeff Briney of O'Fallon, Mo., and John Briney of Mobile, Ala.; two daughters, Marilou Briney of Tuscaloosa and Cynthia Briney of West Palm Beach, Fla; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1 until 2 p.m. Thursday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the cemetery adjacent to the funeral home.
