CHARLESTON -- James Ashley, 68, of Charleston died Thursday, Oct. 3, 1991, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born June 25, 1923, in Obion County, Tenn., the son of the late Elvin Howard and Fannie Ing Ashley.

On Oct. 18, 1942, he married Opal R. Williams, who survives of the home.

He lived in Mississippi County most of his life and was a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Charleston, where he was a deacon for many years.

He formerly was a postal clerk for the Charleston Post Office until his retirement in 1982. He also was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army.

Other survivors include two sons, James E. Ashley of Dandridge, Tenn. and Chief Master Sgt. Monroe Ashley of Eaker Air Force Base in Blytheville, Ark.; three daughters, Sharon Breure of Blair, Okla., and Sandra Harvey and Tracy Fiscus, both of Charleston; three brothers, Gene Ashley of East Prairie, Jack Ashley of Madison Tenn. and Jerry Ashley of Ashland, Ohio; two sisters, Maureen Huffines of Naashville, Tenn. and Martha Janice Kay of Chaffee; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Southside Baptist Church in Charleston, with the Rev. Glenn Rogers officiating. Burial with military graveside rights by Eaker Air Force Base will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Charleston.
