A.L. "Jake" Hardcastle, 81, of Jonesboro, Ark., died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at St. Bernard Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Doniphan. Hardcastle had been an office manager with Social Security Administration in Ardmore, Okla., Shreveport, La., and Fort Smith, Ark. He had lived in Jonesboro since 1984...

A.L. "Jake" Hardcastle, 81, of Jonesboro, Ark., died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at St. Bernard Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Doniphan.

Hardcastle had been an office manager with Social Security Administration in Ardmore, Okla., Shreveport, La., and Fort Smith, Ark. He had lived in Jonesboro since 1984.

He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, and member of its Men's Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Lions Club and was a past president. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

Hardcastle was on the Missouri All-State team in 1934 and was a member of the 1935-36 Southeast Missouri State University Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship team. He was also a member of the track team and set a record in pole vaulting.

His wife Charline died in August 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Tatum of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Charles Hardcastle of Piggott, Ark.; and two granddaughters.

Friends may call at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Doniphan City Cemetery.
