ANNA, Ill. -- Jack G. Ashton, 84, of Carterville, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Ill.

He was born May 2, 1918, in Galesburg, Ill., son of George and Florence Webber Ashton. He and Karyle Holland were married Feb. 3, 1962, in Marion, Ill.

Ashton retired as director of recreation from Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center. He was a member of Anna Heights Baptist Church. He helped in the formation of Special Olympics programs in Illinois.

He was a captain and pilot instructor in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Jackie Swanson of Chatsworth, Calif., David Ashton of Galesburg, Cody Ashton of Carterville, Brady Ashton of Mayfield, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Scott Harner and Dwayne Sheumaker officiating. Private burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery at Marion.
