J. Roy Smith, 70, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at his home.
He was born Aug. 29, 1938, at Puxico, Mo. He and Anita Sheppard were married May 4, 1997, at Branson, Mo. She survives.
Smith graduated from Puxico High School and Howard County Junior College in Big Spring, Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Smith was self employed. His employment history included Shelter Insurance and Real Estate, owner of Mayors Place Restaurant in Puxico, S&J Variety Store in Puxico, Tads Convenience Store, Brighten Up Cleaning Business in Cape Girardeau and Bening Motors in Cape Girardeau.
Smith was the mayor of Puxico from 1966 to 1975 and from 1988 to 1992. He was on the Puxico State Bank board of directors. Smith belonged to First Church in Cape Girardeau.
Survivors include a son, Mitchel J. Smith of Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter, Hayley French of La Quinca, Calif; a stepdaughter, Kim Moore of Caruthersville, Mo.; a sister, Pauline Wilkinson of Trenty, Texas; a grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. today at Morgan Sifford Funeral Home in Puxico.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Gary Brothers officiating.
Burial will be in the Puxico City Cemetery.
