Irene Phipps, 101, of Scott City died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Jackson Manor in Jackson. She was born Feb. 15, 1907, in Lynchburg, Tenn., daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Alice Edgemond Hockersmith. She and James Edward Phipps were married Nov. 24, 1924, in Chester, Ill. He died Jan. 8, 1947...

Irene Phipps, 101, of Scott City died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Jackson Manor in Jackson.

She was born Feb. 15, 1907, in Lynchburg, Tenn., daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Alice Edgemond Hockersmith. She and James Edward Phipps were married Nov. 24, 1924, in Chester, Ill. He died Jan. 8, 1947.

Phipps had worked in the laundry department at Southeast Missouri Hospital. She was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Beauregard of Simmesport, La., Barbara (Herb) Lichtenegger of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lue Phipps of Scott City; a sister, Aleene Ellinger of Scott City; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Phipps; a daughter, Mary Voorhes; four brothers; three sisters; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel, with the Rev. Jim Norris officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery at Charleston, Mo.
