Irene Alberta Gill, 80, of Cape Girardeau went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014. She was born May 24, 1934, in Chaffee, Missouri, to William and Lucy Smith Howell. Irene Alberta Gill, 80, of Cape Girardeau went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014.

She was born May 24, 1934, in Chaffee, Missouri, to William and Lucy Smith Howell.

Irene was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Perkins Baptist Church. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Rockview, Missouri. 

Mrs. Gill worked for 17 years as a cook on a riverboat and was a receptionist at the Career and Technology Center in Cape Girardeau. She loved to sew and listen to music.

Loving survivors include three children, Steve (Earlene) Gill of St. Louis, Brian (Debbie) Gill of Oran, Missouri, and Kelly Gill of Sikeston, Missouri; three grandchildren, Brandon (Katie) Gill of St. Louis, Andrew Gill of Oran and Tiffany (Brian) Holmer of St. Louis; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings, Leo Howell, Bill "Sonny" Howell, Charlie Howell, Harvey Howell, Louis Howell, Goldie Marie Howell and Sally Christine Howell.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steve Proctor officiating. Interment will be in Lorimier Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or VNA Hospice of Missouri.
