Irene Amos, 96, of Cape Girardeau passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, at Ratliff Care Center.
Irene was born March 23, 1923, in Gordonville to Martin Fred and Mary Celia Meier Amos.
She moved to St. Louis in 1924 to complete nurse's training at City Hospital. She served as a registered nurse at City Hospital for 41 years.
Irene was deeply involved in her church, Trinity United Church of Christ, and loved to bake and play pinochle and games with her family and friends. In 1985, she retired to Cape Girardeau. She was an active member of Evangelical United Church of Christ and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Irene spent her life thinking of, encouraging and serving others.
Irene is survived by her sister, Mildred Amos Hoxie of Arlington, Virginia; niece, Margaret (Deen) Hoxie Kaplan, and their sons, Joshua and Jonathan of McLean, Virginia; great-niece, Wendi (Steve) Aldridge Nipp of Oakland, Tennessee, and their children, Jennifer (John) Nipp Crowley, and daughter, Madeline of Madison, Alabama, and Ricky Nipp of South Fulton, Tennessee; and dear cousins and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Norman (Opal) Amos; brother-in-law, Frank Hoxie; and niece, Ruth Ann (Richard) Amos Aldridge.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Service will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Gerald Collier officiating. Following the service, burial will be at St. James United Church of Christ Cemetery in Tilsit.
Memorial contributions may be given to Safe Harbor Hospice or Ratliff Care Center.
