COBDEN, Ill. -- Howard W. Smith, 85, of Carterville, formerly of Cobden, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996, at his home.
He was born Sept. 8, 1911, in Jonesboro, son of Hervey H. and Elva Holmes Smith. He and Elva M. Crowell were married June 24, 1930. She died Aug. 15, 1983.
Smith was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Howard Smith of Walsenburg, Colo., Donald Smith of Cobden, Jerry Smith of Salem; two daughters, Linda Baxter of Carterville, Pamela Smith of Murphysboro; two sisters, Mabel Stanley of Florida, Mildred Blessing of Cobden; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden after 11 a.m. Thursday.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kenneth Mixen officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Memorial Gardens.
