TAMMS, Ill. -- Horace A. Lucas, 90, of Glendale, Ariz., died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Sun Health Hospice in Peoria, Ariz.
He was born April 14, 1910, in John Day, Ore., son of Lucius E. and Helen Steil Lucas. He first married Helen Abercrombie, who preceded him in death. He later married Gladys Titus, who also preceded him in death.
Lucas received a degree in logging engineering from Oregon State.
He was employed 40 years with the U.S. Forest Service, primarily in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. His first assignment was in 1933 at the newly formed Delta Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Alexander County, whose members started developing Shawnee National Forest.
Lucas also served as district ranger for the Shawnee, Shequamegon, Ottawa and Manistee National Forests. He also supervised a Works Progress Administration program in western Tennessee that supplied timber for World War II needs during the early 1940s.
Before his final return to Carbondale he served briefly in Indiana and Pennsylvania with the State and Private Forest Agency, conducting watershed research. He retired in 1972.
Lucas was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, American Association of Foresters, and Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star in communities where he lived.
Survivors include a son, John Lucas of Pinckney, Mich.; two daughters, Lynette Luick of Buffalo, Minn., Joan Lucas of Webster, Minn.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Ebersohl officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
