TAMMS, Ill. -- Herman David Hazelwood, 90, of Tamms died Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Tamms to Tom and Ethel (Knifong) Hazelwood. He married Laura Ethelyn Honey on May 1, 1946.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He worked as a forester with the U.S. Forest Service and was also a farmer for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Laura, of Tamms; a daughter, Janifer Robinson of Cairo, Ill.; a son, Vance (Debby) Hazelwood of Tamms; and two grandaughters, Laurinda Marshall of Granite City, Ill., and Regina Vanhasseler of Jackson; two grandsons, Thomas Hazelwood of Cape Girardeau and Samuel Hazelwood of Wickliffe, Ky; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Haskell Hazelwood of Elkton, Md.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herbert and Ruben Hazelwood; and a sister, Claudia Hazelwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Mark Kirk and Ronnie Brown officiating.

Burial will be in McCrite Cemetery with military rites by a ritual team made up of area veterans and the Illinois National Guard Honor Unit.

Memorials may be made to McCrite Cemetery or the Mounds, Ill., Lions Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
