Herbert Louis Stephens, 82, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at the Lutheran Home.

He was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Peoria, Ill., son of Herbert William and Virginia Schwabacher Stephens. He and Jane DeGuire were married April 30, 1940, at Rolla.

Stephens had served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., for two years and was a graduate of MIT in Boston with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey and for Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Penn.

He moved to Cape Girardeau in 1967 and started the Flaming Pit restaurant, where he was owner and manager. He retired in 1980.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Stephens of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Susan Elrod of Cape Girardeau; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.

Funeral will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Ron Watts officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
