Herbert William "Schimmel" Rellergert, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Old Appleton, to August Andrew and Louise Mary Trapp Rellergert.

He and Mary Chaffin were married May 24, 1958, at St. Joseph Church in Apple Creek, Missouri.

Herb served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He joined the Navy on Nov. 11, 1943, and served on the USS Mercy hospital ship. He was honorably discharged April 22, 1946, and then re-enlisted for the Korean War in 1952.

Herb's first job was working alongside his father in the Old Appleton Brewery. After the Navy, he worked for Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis and eventually became a truck driver for Missouri Distributors, where he retired in 1986.

He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and VFW Post 3838.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, taking walks and scenic drives, and visiting the bridge at Old Appleton. He was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Rellergert of Cape Girardeau; sons, Andrew Rellergert of St. Louis, Eric (Kyle Owens) Rellergert of Cape Girardeau and Kevin (Melissa) Rellergert of Imperial, Missouri; daughters, Julie Freeman, Marise Compass and Melanie (Tim) Beard, all of Cape Girardeau; sister, Helen (Robert) Stroder of Cape Girardeau; sisters-in-law, Betty Rellergert of St. Louis and Marilyn Rellergert of Jackson; grandchildren, Christopher Rellergert, Brittany Beard, Erica Beard, Brennan Beard, Courtney Rellergert, Nathan Rellergert, Stephen Rellergert and Joshua Marshall.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edmund and Edgar Rellergert; sisters, Matilda (Rudy) Buchheit and Lavina Rellergert.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Allan Saunders officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau. Full military rites will be provided by Missouri Honors Team.
