GORDONVILLE: Mr. Henry J. Wessel age 96, a life long resident of the Gordonville Community passed away at his home Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999. Mr. Wessel was born July 17, 1903 son of the late William H. and Emma A. (Sievers) Wessel. He married the former Sophie E. Eggimann Feb. 11, 1934 in Dutchtown, Mo. and she survives of the family home So. of Gordonville.
Also surviving are two sons and two daughter-in-laws, Kenneth and Sandi Wessel of Center Harbor, New Hampshire, and Paul and Gwyn Wessel of Port Angeles, Washington. Four daughters and two son-in-laws, Emogene and Robert Schaffner of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Marion and Neil McClard of Seattle, Washington, Norma Tschida of Prior Lake Minnesota and Gladys Orr serving in the Peace Corp. at Moldova. One sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Robert Smith of Boulder, Colorado. 17-Grandchildren, 33-Great Grandchildren and 1-Great-Great Granddaughter. Preceded by 2-brothers and 5-sisters.
Mr. Wessel was Baptized and Confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church So. of Gordonville and has remained a member all his life. He was a Charter Sunday School member, teacher and superintendent. He was a Past President of the Congregation, charter member of the Men's Dart Ball Team as well as Past member of the Men's Club.
He was a Past President and former member of the Gordonville School Board as well as a former Farm Bureau member.
Mr. and Mrs. Wessel have resided and reared all their children from the family farm So. of Gordonville on Hwy. 25.
Visitation will be from 5-8 Wednesday at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 at the Zion Lutheran Church So. of Gordonville. Rev. Wayne Schwiesow will officiate with burial in the Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the church Thursday morning at 10 am.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Zion Lutheran Building Fund, The Lutheran Home or Southeast Hospice.
