Helen Wiens

Helen Marie Hendry Wiens, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, in Prairie Village, Kan.

She was born Dec. 31, 1918, in Newton, Kan. She was married March 22, 1944, to Richard Wiens, also of Newton. He died Sept. 5, 2002.

A 1937 graduate of Newton High School, she held a bachelor's degree in music education from Kansas State Teachers College, and a master's degree from Webster University.

Mrs. Wiens retired in 1987 after teaching vocal music in elementary schools, including 23 years at Claymont in the Parkway School District in St. Louis County. An accomplished soprano and pianist, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity, Choraliers, and the Keramic Club art group. In later years she sang with the choir at Cherokee Christian Church in Prairie Village.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara (Frank) Titterington of Prairie Village, Julie (John) Wolpers of Cape Girardeau; six grandchildren, Mary Anne (J.D.) Fair of Fairway, Kan., Martha Titterington of Kansas City, Jane Titterington of New Orleans, David Titterington of Niihama, Japan, John Wolpers of Columbia, Mo., and Annie Wolpers of Cape Girardeau.

Following a private memorial service, burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Cremation Society of Kansas and Missouri in Prairie Village was in charge of arrangements.
