Helen M. Smith, 76, of Cape Girardeau, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born Sept. 30, 1933, in Cape Girardeau, to Norman and Mildred Niemann Faucett. She and Howard Keith Smith were married Sept. 4, 1981, in Cape Girardeau.

Smith worked at the Cape Girardeau Medical Society for 13 years and as a University of Missouri surgery administrative assistant for one year. She was a member of the Ladies Eagles Auxiliary No. 3775 for over 15 years, VFW Women's Auxiliary No. 3838 for over 15 years and Honorary Elks Auxiliary No. 639 member for over five years. During her retirement she worked for the Cape Girardeau School District. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Survivors include two sons, Kent Wissman and his wife Ellen, Marc Wissman and his wife Debra, all of Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren, Taylor Wissman, Jake Wissman, Marc Wissman, Austin Wissman and Axel Wissman. She is also survived by her Pomeranian, Dixie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Jan. 3, 1992, and her parents.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel, with parish prayers at 7 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Holshuf officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
